Located off Interstate 57, Bourbonnais is 60 miles south of the Chicago Loop and 80 miles north of Champaign. US Route 45/52 is also a major artery through the Village. Due to our convenient location, Bourbonnais is close to a variety of restaurants and shopping. Housing is available in all price ranges for residents as well as a retirement community for senior citizens. Bourbonnais’ schools are excellent and ably serve the Village’s children’s educational needs. Bourbonnais is “business friendly”. We see the addition of commercial and industrial developers as partners to the growth of our area. Residents and visitors to the area can enjoy many recreational opportunities at the nearby Kankakee River State Part as well as at many of the numerous community parks, youth sports programs, festivals, and much more. Bourbonnais is honored to serve as the “Summer Home” to the Chicago Bears training camp at Olivet Nazarene University.
Village Board of Trustees
The Village Board is comprised of the Mayor, Village Clerk, and six Trustees, elected, at-large, to individual, four-year overlapping terms. The Village Board meets on the first and third Mondays of each month, and other times as necessary. Meeting times and dates are posted in the Village hall, and all meetings are held in compliance with the Illinois Open Meetings Act.
The Office of the Village Administrator and the Administration Department are located in the Village Hall, 700 Main Street NW, Bourbonnais. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
The Village of Bourbonnais operates under the Council/Administrator form of government. The Village Administrator is the Chief Administrative Officer of the Village, and is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Village. Appointed by the Mayor, with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees, the Village Administrator is responsible for a myriad of activities, including, but not limited to the following:
- to prepare an annual budget for consideration by the Board
- to administer the budget and to recommend such budget control procedures as may be necessary and appropriate
- to establish and maintain a centralized personnel records system for the entire village
- to prepare and recommend to the Mayor and Board of Trustees an employee evaluation program, and to administer that program as a continuous ongoing program to identify training needs and ascertain existing competency levels.
- to assist the Mayor and Board of Trustees in the development of a comprehensive economic development plan
- to initiate programs to update the Village’s Comprehensive Plan
- to establish short and long range planning capacities for land use, budget, capital facilities and government operations
- to establish and maintain liaison relationships with other levels and units of government
- to identify current state and federal funding sources and to ascertain the Village eligibility for same
The Administration Department for the Village includes the Village Administrator, Executive Secretary/Administrative Assistant, and Benefits Coordinator.
Building Department - Code Enforcement
Under the direction of Building Commissioner, the Bourbonnais Building Department is responsible for overseeing all construction and development activity in the Village of Bourbonnais.
Building codes are reviewed annually to ensure the most up to date codes are enforced. Many building codes are revised every three years to reflect changes in material design, composition, and construction techniques.

Under the direction of Finance Director and in cooperation with the Village Treasurer, the Finance Department is responsible for collecting and accounting of all funds received and expended by the Village, maintaining the financial investments of the Village, and providing information to the Mayor, Board of Trustees, Village Administrator and Department Heads as to the status of these funds.
The Village of Bourbonnais maintains over 100 acres of parkland throughout the Village. The parks offer a myriad of activities from passive to active, including basketball courts, tennis courts, picnic shelters, bike trails and river access. Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals:
Coordination of planning activities, implementation of the comprehensive plan, and consideration of variances, special use permits, and planned unit developments are handled through the Bourbonnais Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals.
Members of the Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals are appointed by the Mayor, with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees. Members are appointed for overlapping five-year terms.
The Bourbonnais Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals conducts public hearing on all applications for rezoning, special use permits, planned unit developments, zoning variations, ordinance amendments, and requests for annexations, as specified in the Illinois Complied State Statutes.
The Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals also reviews and acts on subdivision applications.
The Bourbonnais Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Bourbonnais Village Hall, 700 Main Street, NW, Bourbonnais. Illinois. Under the guidance of Director, the fourteen members of the Bourbonnais Public Works Department and Sewer Billing Department are responsible for maintenance of all Village Streets, parks, municipal buildings and grounds, and for the billing and collection of sewer user fees.
