Service/program name: Peer-Run Drop in Center- Thresholds New Freedom Center Kankakee
Description: The Thresholds Center for Recovery program, located at several locations throughout the Chicagoland area, is designed to help people with severe mental illness develop the skills to live successfully in the community while also fostering meaningful friendships with others.
The Kankakee location has a peer run drop-in center, the Thresholds New Freedom Center Kankakee, which promotes recovery and positive social activities.

Service/program name: Assertive Outreach
Description: The program is distinguished by intensive case management through home visiting services. Outreach workers, operating as a team, see members wherever they may be--usually at their homes, but seldom in program offices. Usually for members at high risk for hospitalization,Outreach workers provide one-on-one rehabilitation in the community. This "assertive" model of care helps to break a cycle of repeated psychiatric admission. Services are provided on a time unlimited basis.

Service/program name: Residential Services
Description: The Thresholds Residential Program offers a variety of community housing including supervised group homes and independent living apartments for people with severe mental illness. The level of clinical supervision depends on individual needs. Currently, the agency manages more than 40 residential developments in the Chicagoland area, totaling about 600 beds.

A Thresholds residence is more than shelter. Residents are taught basic living skills, including diet, hygiene, and money management. Many residences also offer opportunities to develop friendships through communal living and shared activities.

Move to a more independent level of housing

Service/program name: Supported Employment
Description: Thresholds provides supervised vocational skills training in a structured and supported environment. Additionally, teams of job support and placement staff assist members in their vocational pursuits.
Services include vocational assessment, career exploration, assistance with job placement, job coaching and on the job support.

The Thresholds vocational program is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor for its outstanding effort in assuring equal employment opportunity and affirmative action for people with mental illness. The agency was honored with the Department of Labor's Exemplary Public Interest Contribution award in 1996.
